The Final Project

Although we are in week 2 of 6 weeks of Technology in Education, I spent the day remaking the assignment for my students' final project. Usually we work together in a project based environment to create a Teacher Tech Handbook with summaries of the latest tech tools. This handbook is then sent out to local teachers for free and under a creative commons license so that they can adapt any student made worksheets to their needs.

My fall students completed a pretty robust text and this spring I thought my students would be making videos about how to integrate these technologies for various content areas and grades. In light of the current COVID-19 education experiment, I have been thinking of alternatives.

"Lend a Hand" <-- This is one of the options my students can choose from. I am asking them to find someone who could benefit from their new tech knowledge. Their only parameter is to use a minimum of 2 tech tools, Screencastify mixed with Google Sites for example. I listed a few ideas for them based on the model demonstrated by my TA who is managing student learning for various families from his home computer. I am excited to see what they come up with and also hope to be able to use some of their reflections in the upcoming edition of the Teacher Tech Handbook.

"Create a Remote Learning Lesson" <-- This is the other option. Students can simulate one lesson in our new online schooling landscape. My students will take a lesson plan that they wrote for another course and adapt it for remote emergency online learning. These lessons will be housed on their personal websites that they are creating this week (week 2).  I hope that simulating the processes that in-service teachers are utilizing daily will help them to be compassionate and better prepared.

I look forward to seeing my students tomorrow in class. The morning class has grown each day (currently at 9 attendees) and the afternoon is dwindling. Those who attend are keeping up well and participation in assignments has been pretty steady for everyone over all. I reached out to the few that missed assignments and have heard from most. It is odd to think that some may be ill and not able to respond...
